Sustainably Improving Maternal and Newborn Health in Uganda

Maternal & Infant Health Award
Finalist
Babies and Mothers Alive Foundation

Babies and Mother Alive Foundation will scale a fully engaged partnership with district governments and the Ugandan Ministry of Health to improve maternal and newborn health dramatically.

Last Updated: September 2024

Executive Summary

Lack of access to quality maternal and newborn care is a root cause of high maternal and newborn mortality in countries like Uganda. Maternal mortality is 336 deaths/100,000 live births, and perinatal mortality is 38 deaths/1,000 births. In Uganda, 6,000 women and 45,000 infants die annually of preventable complications of pregnancy and childbirth.

BAMA is a partnership that builds on the strengths of the local health system. It focuses on district-led programming, quality of care, and robust M&E systems providing timely data for action. BAMA transforms district health systems into “centers of excellence” by training and motivating a corps of 30 government-employed Mentor Midwives and 150 Community Health Workers, Mama and Papa Ambassadors, and champions of maternal, reproductive, and child health and rights. Since 2015, BAMA has reduced institutional maternal and perinatal deaths by 74% and 48% in two districts and is ready to scale to five districts serving 1,115,540 people.
