Executive Summary

AIJ is a bold community-led and focused organization created to meet critical unmet needs of underserved immigrant domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking survivors and Alaska Native communities facing inequitable policy barriers preventing their urgent need to implement community-led adaptation.

AIJ houses three equity-focused programs dedicated to protecting the human rights of Alaskans including:

1) Immigration Legal Program;

2) Language Interpreter Center; and

3) Climate Justice Institute. AIJ has served over 7,000 legal clients since 2005.

Over 70 percent of AIJ’s clients are domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking survivors. AIJ’s Language Interpreter Center provides access to over 100 languages for non-profit, government and private organizations across Alaska to make their services accessible, critical during the Pandemic. AIJ amplifies the voices of Indigenous communities within Alaska and globally through community-led adaptation strategies to protect the health and well-being of their communities experiencing dangerous flooding, permafrost thaw and erosion. The majority of AIJ's board and leadership staff identify as indigenous or people of color reflecting the diverse communities it serves.

AIJ is an award-winning program with fourteen staff who represent the experiences of Alaska’s underserved communities and combined speak English, Hmong, Korean, Spanish, German, and French. AIJ’s transformative work addresses systemic racism, colonialism, discrimination and threats to health and safety of communities facing the devastating impacts of climate change by empowering the clients and communities we serve to advocate for state and national policy-level changes to increase access to resources to protect their human rights.
