Executive Summary
The Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health’s (AAIUH) mission is to reduce health disparities and improve health outcomes for underserved groups. AAIUH is a leading Brooklyn-based community health empowerment and education Institute that reaches over 3,000 individuals per year.
The Institute recognizes that communities of color share a disproportionate burden of adverse health outcomes; and it is important that community members are reached where they congregate, and provided with needed messages and resources to improve their health outcomes. Therefore, the Institute conducts community-based health promotion and research programs in trusted non-traditional settings, such as barbershops and beauty salons, wherein barbers and stylists are trained as lay health educators to deliver health messages to their clients.
AAIUH partners with community leaders, activists, legislators, providers, academic institutions, small business, and community members on a range of programs and initiatives. Through these efforts, AAIUH works to research and develop innovative community health empowerment programs, provide evidence-based behavioral health interventions in community settings that help participants address chronic health conditions and advocate for their health, prepare youth of color to succeed in college and become healthcare professionals, and improve the capacity of healthcare providers’ and community-based organizations capacity to address health disparities.
The Institute is committed to community-based healthcare and workforce development. All programs are designed with community input, and work to build resilience in Brooklyn neighborhoods by lessening the health disparities that affect underserved communities of color.
