Executive Summary

The California Environmental Voters Education Fund (Ed Fund) has a mission to protect California’s natural resources and improve the health of our communities by educating, engaging, and empowering all Californians. We are in a climate emergency, and the communities we serve are disproportionately experiencing the impacts of climate change every day, even though they have done the least to cause the crisis and are the least able to prepare and recover from it. These communities are typically home to racial and ethnic minorities, and people that have intentionally been left out of policy development and historically had their needs and concerns ignored by their government representation. The Ed Fund is a majority BIPOC organization with staff that have grown up in frontline communities such as Los Angeles, the Inland Empire and Central Valley, and continue to experience the same social, economic, and environmental challenges that those we serve face today. By empowering community members to engage in climate advocacy and become climate voters, we are increasing the chances of passing bold policies in California that require climate action and prioritize implementation of climate mitigation solutions in these frontline communities. These solutions will improve the well-being of all community members by advancing their capacity to address the impacts of climate change and enhancing community resilience, such as through improving air quality which will lower the risks of respiratory illness or providing infrastructure and resources to prepare for extreme weather events, which will lower injury and mortality rates from flooding and heat.
